What causes a man to dream?

To attain a status nigh attainable

To follow a path shrouded in endless misfortune

And what, pray tell, causes the pursuit of a dream?

After denial of hope and a sea of failures

What causes the spirit to linger,

and trudge it's aching body ever onward?

The set of mind, the enduring will,

leads one to the impossible achievements

That would otherwise be mere fantasy,

mere dreams
I wrote this after thinking of the most famous scene Shakespeare has ever written; Hamlet's speech. I remembered "to sleep perchance to dream, Aye, there's the rub!" and started contemplating the concept of dreams.

At it's most rudimentary form, the definition of a "dream" is a idea, longing or desire that is impossible (or nearly impossible) to reach. These longings could be clear, coming from your concious while awake, or they could be obscure, coming from your subconcious while you're in the deeper stages of sleep, literally in the form of dreams.

But i digress. I was exploring in my head what brings people to chase after things that they cannot reach; making only foolish jesters out of what seems to be desperation. And yet dispite this massive amount of oppisition, a few push stubbornly on, and acheive their dream.

Actually now that I have disected my writing, it seems the Shakespeare only got me started. It's clear to me now that my real insperation came from Wolf's Rain, and my favorite song, Gravity (the end credits of the former.) Kiba pushes on, throughout the whole show to reach his dream, Paradise, because that dream is all he has. His dream keeps him going, it gives him purpose. So he limps on, struggly till his death. As he lies bleeding in the snow, Paradise opens, and Kiba dies.

Oh wow, I can't stay on topic at all. Eh, I give up.
